It’s been a long time, Bush. When [easyazon-link asin="B005JCTW9E"]The Sea Of Memories[/easyazon-link] was announced, I had a case of old-fan-new-album anxiety. What does 10 years later Bush sound like, because yeah, it’s been 10 years since Golden State was released. Would I still like what I found? Is it the Bush I knew and used to love?
After listening to the album a few times; yes. This is a solid album. It has a few comparative low points: songs that seem to go nowhere, or with non-melodic vocals, hooks that are less catchy than a Nolan Ryan fastball (google it, children).
The best song of the album is Baby Come Home, which, if it were a wine, I would say has some slight notes of citrus and vanilla, and a hint of Prizefighter from their late 90′s album The Science of Things. Baby Come Home is uptempo and lush melodic, with a hook that could catch the biggest, meanest shark in the ocean. If nothing else, check this track out.
Other standout tracks:
Red Light – Another uptempo track, this one could have been the best track on Golden State, but instead it’s the second or third best track on The Sea of Memories.
All Night Doctors – What is this song even about? Who cares, man?! This is Gavin at his incomprehensible finest. This song is Glycerine pt. II. The words don’t make much sense to me, but it’s got that trashy, steady electric guitar playing out of place among a piano (instead of strings, as in Glycerine). This song is beautiful, and does a good job of mirroring (and not copying) Bush’s biggest hit. I’ll leave you with the chorus, because it’s the best part of the album:
All night doctors
All night preachers
All night girls to get you through
Lost and wasted
Hope is fading
And I wait here for you
I must also make special mention of Be Still My Love, the last track on the album is desperate in a good way, the lyrics are like the grasping hands of someone drowning as they slip beneath the waves for the final time. The drum pulsing, erratic drumbeat is somehow soft, somehow nurturing, adding a depth to the song that would be absent if the drums were removed. Be Still My Love is sad and hopeful at the same time. It has more layers than a croissant. For me? It was the perfect ending for this album.
